Historic Results
A couple of Games Committee members are working on a project to bring you some of the historic record results from previous Nairn Highland Games. We hope to have that fully gathered, and presented here for you, by Spring 2025, but we do have the earliest records, published here below, due to the diligence and research of Alasdair MacDonald, Highland and Islands representative for the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association (R.S.H.G.A.)
The first advertised Nairn Games was a Christmas Games, held 25th December 1865
Putting the Stone (weight 18 lbs) 1st, William Fraser, Clunas. (31 ft. 1 in.) ; 2nd, John Mann, Cawdor, 30 ft. 3¼ in.)
High Leap — 1st, John Mackintosh, (4 ft. 9 ½ in.) ; 2nd, John Mackie, (4 ft. 8 in.)
Long Leap — 1st, John Mackie, (18 ft.) ; 2nd, James Gray, (17 feet.)
Hurdle Race — 1st, John Mackie ; 2nd, John Mackintosh.
Sack Race — 1st, Andrew Macdonald ; 2nd, John Mackie.
Wheel-barrow Race — 1st, Roland Fraser ; 2nd, Alexander Yule.

The second Nairn Games was a New Year's Day Games, held 1st January 1867
This Games looked to be postponed, due to snow and ice on Nairn Links - but the committee changed their mind by lunchtime, and the Games went ahead that afternoon. It does go some way to explaining, however, why the committee chose to hold the Nairn Games in August, ever thereafter!
For the long race 5 competed, and the prizetakers were (1) John Mackie, (2) DuncanClark, and (3) Andrew Macdonald.
Several boys’ races were run of which the winners were (1) David Storm, (2) Wm. Shearer, and (3) Robert Mackintosh.
Putting the stone (8 competitors) winners were (1)Donald Campbell, Alness, (2) Evan Macdonald, Nairn, (3) John Mackie, Nairn.
Alexander Macgregor, Glentruim & John Mackie entered the dancing of the Highland Fling, and were declared equal - Macgregor bearing off the palm for neat dancing, and Mackie for the vigorous action and prolonged exertion characteristic of the dance.
The Games were brought to a close with the dancing of a Highland Reel.

This Games is accurately described as the first annual August meeting for athletic sports and Highland games to be held in Nairn.

Bagpipe Competition (7 Entries) — 1, Paul Mackillop, Highland Light Infantry Militia ; 2, Thomas Macbain, 91 st Highlanders.
Dancing Highland Fling in Full Highland Dress (9 Entries) — 1, T. S. Douglas, Aberdeen; 2, James Gordon, Abernethy,
Reel of Tulloch (8 Entries) — 1, T. S. Douglas ; 2, Robert Smith, Abernethy.
Sword Dance (4 Entries) — Robert Smith, Abernethy.
Long Leap (5 Entries) — 1, Serjeant Macilven, 42d Highlanders, 18 ft. 5 in. ; 2, James Grant, 17 ft 7 in. ; 3, John George, 17 ft.
High Leap (7 Entries) — The first and second prizes were equally divided between Serjeant Macilven and Donald Dinnie, who each leaped 5 ft. 5 in.
Foot Race, 600 Yards (11 Entries) — 1, Serjeant Macilven ; 2, John Mackie, Nairn.
Boys’ Foot Race — Open to boys under 10 years of age (10 entries) — 1, William Foley; 2, Donald Macbain ; 3, William Cumming
Hurdle Race (12 Entries) — 1, James Dow, Fifeshire Militia ; 2, James Hill, do.
Sack Race (10 Entries) — 1, Wm. Nicol, Forres ; 2, Henry Henderson, Nairn.
Three-legged Race (6 Pairs) — 1, Thomas Thomson and James Hill, Fifeshire Militia ; 2,William Gunn and George Macdonald. Nairn.
